How to reach Yercaud

There is a long road going around the middle part of the Taluk connecting Nagalur, Semmanatham, Cauvery Peak, Vellakkadai, Manjakuttai villages and it is 35 Km in length. There is also a bus route from Salem to Yercaud via Ayothiyapattanam, Kuppanur and Kottachedu. State Transport Corporation, Salem and two private operations serve the travelling public. There are many villages connected by bus in Yercaud Taluk.

By Air

The nearest airport is Trichy (163 Km) You can hire a cab from the airport to Yercaud. Other options are Coimbatore (190 Kms) or Bangalore (222 Km) for convenient air connections. Coimbatore is 190 Km away. They are all connected to Madras (Chennai) which has an International Airport. Trichy is also connected to Colombo (Sri Lanka). Salem (35 Km) is the nearest railhead and bus services are available from Yercaud, Chennai and many other points.

By Rail

Ideal would be to take the Yercaud Express from Madras (Chennai). Salem is 335 Km from Madras on the main railway line. Salem Junction is 36 Km away from Yercaud and Salem Town is 33 Km. Since Salem station is a junction, all south bound trains passing via Salem do stop over at Salem.Trains link Salem to Cochin, Erode, Trivandrum and Mangalore. If your source of journey is Chennai, you can take the Yercaud Express - this journey is around 335 Km. Salem that is thirty Km away. the nearest railway station is at the Salem Junction and the Salem Town.

By Road

Regular bus services ply from Madras, Salem and other important points.Yercaud 30 Km away and an hour's drive from Salem, can be reached by bus or taxi. (National Highway No 47 from Bangalore.). Bus services operate from Salem Junction and Salem bus stand to Yercaud frequently. covering a 30 Km distance in roughly an hour. You will find a bus leaving for its destination every half hour or so there is no town bus service in Yercaud, but certain buses coming from Salem ply through Yercaud and connect the important Villages like Cauvery Peak, Valavanthi, Nagalur, Velakkadai, and Swinton Bridge are also connected to the hill resort with Yercaud. Salem is in turn linked with Cochin, Erode, Trivandrum and Mangalore.

Yercaud is connected by road to Salem and there are frequent buses to and from Salem, from where it is possible to get buses to any other place in Tamil Nadu. There are buses every half hour. The last bus going up in the night is at 1030. The mid night service is at 200 in the morning after which regular service resumes at 430 in the morning. Buses, both private and government owned, ply throughout the day to Salem.

    Taxis

    Private Taxis are available. Maruti van conveys visitors to all points for Rs 250. Hotel vans are also available and are a bit costly to reach far out destinations. Yercaud is well connected by road with the towns of Salem, Cheney, Trichy, Madurai, Bangalore and Coimbatore. Salem is well linked with Cochin, Erode, Trivandrum and Mangalore. Yercaud by rented car, taxi or bus from any of these nodal points. The range on accommodation is limited but there are some decent midrung hotels at Yercaud. You'll probably walk around in town or rent a car to wander around the region.

    Bangalore to Yercaud

    The journey is beautiful. The roads are slightly until Hosur. From Hosur, NH47 is extremely good till Krishnagiri. Once you turn towards Dharmapuri, be ready for some unexpected, really nasty potholes. This kind of road continues until Dharmapuri. From there on, the road is okay. From Salem to Yercaud, the first 1520 Km is plain road, the last stretch of around 10 Km is the Ghat section. The hairpin bends are much easier (than Ooty) and since there is not much traffic, driving on the Ghat is not a big deal. The drive is good, not strenuous and the view is worth it. If you can, do drive to Yercaud instead of taking a bus.
