Yercaud Town is situated above 4800' from mean sea level. The highest point in Yercaud Taluk is Shevaroy Temple which is situated at a height of 5326'. Hence, Yercaud hill area is called "Shevaroyan Hills". It is also called "Ooty of the Poor". Yercaud is the Anglicised version of the Tamil, Yerikaadu (yeri is lake and kaadu is forest), the name given to the lake and high wooded areas in Salem district. It consisted of Kadukamara, Nagalur and other villages, of which Ondikdai (Tamil for "one shop village") was nearest to the lake.

Located 1500 meters above sea level near Salem in Tamil Nadu in the Shevaroy range of hills, Yercaud offers you the bounties of any hill resort - great weather, beautiful scenic spots, breathtaking sights of the mountains and steep roads that boast of beautiful scenery on either side. But as a tourist or a traveler, there's one thing you get here that most other places fail to deliver - total peace of mind. Yercaud is a hill station situated on Shevaroyan Hill Range in Tamilnadu. It is around 230 Km. from Bangalore and around 30 Km from Salem. It is a small, relatively unknown place and very, very peaceful. Since not many tourists haunt this place, its very serene. The main problem which for us is a big plus point is that there is nothing to 'see' here. No museums, palaces or gardens. It's the perfect place to spend a couple of quiet, undisturbed days with your inner self.

Just before the road begins to climb up the mountains to Yercaud, do look out for an interesting group of brightly coloured idols to the left of the road. These guardian deities, found only in Tamil Nadu, are worshipped as protectors of villages and are often known as Aiyanars.
