Shevaroyan Hill in Yercaud

Yercaud in the Servaroyan hills (Shevaroy Range) of Salem District is a quiet and restful hill station in Tamil Nadu. The Servaroyan Hills as a whole, provide many beautiful vistas and panoramic views. Yercaud itself is a pretty hill station with a pleasant cool climate. Yercaud's temperature never rises above 30'C or falls below 13'C. This is one hill station where one does not feel the biting cold of winter. With such a salubrious climate, Yercaud can be visited round the year. It is an hour's drive from Salem and is the least expensive hill station in India.

It is situated on the Servaroyan Hills. The tribals here celebrate their Annual Festival in May every year. The temple houses a cave that supposedly was the getaway tunnel of the king who lived around in those times. A delightful hill with magnificent views of the hills and the plains in between. On top of the hill there is a cave temple with a modern facade dedicated to the local deity Lord Shervarayan and his wife Goddess Kaveri. It is the highest point in Yercaud, 5,326 ft above sea level. Thousands of tribals take part in the colourful annual festival in the month of May.

The Shevaroy Yercaud is situated nearly at the summit of the Shevaroys at an elevation of 4700ft. above MSL. The Shevaroy hills are a small group of hills in the Eastern Ghats covering an area of one hundred and forty eight square miles in extent and are about seventeen miles long from northeast to southwest and from southeast to northwest are twelve miles broad. The highest point in the Shevaroys, the Nranfill Hill (Solai Karadu) is 5410 ft. It is one of the Green Hills. There are 67 villages and 27 hamlets with a total population of about 60,000 of whom 45,000 are tribals. The elevation ranges from 2500ft to 5200ft. above MSL. The mean temperature ranges between 22 Deg to 25 Deg. In winter temperature may rarely go below 7 Deg and on extremely hot days temperature may shoot upto 32 Deg. The average rainfall is about 45" to 60" from both the SouthWest and North East Monsoon. Montfort School and Sacred Heart Convent are situated here and are famous all over the world. The big lake is a natural formation and the Ornamental lake in town is man made. In the vaniyar valley teak is grown by the Forest Department and a drive through this area is both refreshing and an eye opener to the beauty of this valley. The hill tribes who cultivated these land are said to have abandoned this area after plague struck the area. The Reserve forests are getting denuded. Original tree species are dwindling. Bisons are frequently seen in the teak forest, 11 Kms from town. Yercaud has around 40 varieties of Orchids. There is an Orchidarium belonging to the Botanical Survey of India with a vast collection of Indian orchids and rare plants.

Yercaud is a small hill station in the Shevaroy Hills near Salem at a height of 1500 meters, a nice getaway from Coimbatore ( 200 Km ), quiet and serene, surrounded by coffee plantations, ideal for walks and relaxing. The annual summer festival is in May when there are boat races on the artificial lake; flower shows and fruits flood the stalls. Not only is it popular with holiday makers, but also with companies who now hold incentive meetings and conferences in the pleasant surroundings of this delightful town.
